Research Activities
Mongolia
I am a member of the Manchester Institute of of Social and Spatial Transformations. My research includes assessing the current position of the rape crisis movement in the UK.
2005 brought a visit to Mongolia to begin a project – ‘Women, Crime and Social Change in the Republic of Mongolia since 1990’ – to liaise with the Mongolian Women Lawyers Association in evaluating new legislation on Domestic Violence (see blog in Links). This was funded by the Committee for Central and Inner Asia (CCIA) Faculty of Oriental Studies, Cambridge.

An article has been published about this research - Mongolian Research - Jones, H. (2006) ‘Working Together: Local and Global Imperatives for Women in Mongolia’. Asia Europe Journal Vol. 4, (3): 417-430. (ISSN 1612-1031).

Comparative Criminology and Pedagogy
I currently lead an international network which is exploring comparative criminology.
There are two distinct projects - IEE Project and Focus on Crime
The IEE student comunication project began with the University of West Florida and comprises four UK universities and four in the US. The initial pilot, developed by the two universities, contained material relevant to the field of criminology but is readily applicable and transferable to other disciplines. The key objective is to facilitate critical, comparative analysis of contemporary issues in criminology. The project has been disseminated at conferences in the USA, Europe and the UK and has produced a number of peer-reviewed articles.

The project was mentioned in MMU's Annual Report and in 2005 I was awarded the Teaching Innovation and Excellence award.
This was followed in 2006 by a grant from C-SAP (£10,350) to evaluate the international e-communication initiative for which I am the academic lead.
Other research interests involve developing teaching practice. I was awarded a project grant in 2004 by the MMU Learning and Teaching Unit to consolidate e-learning opportunities across all three stages of the student career in criminology. WebCT is the university's Virtual Learning environment. I was involved in a project on WebCT mentoring during 2005/6 in partnership with the Learning and Teaching Unit. This scheme complemented the central training provided by the Learning and Teaching Unit by providing a first point of contact in the Faculty for 9 mentees and their course teams. I have also conducted research on the student experience of this form of course delivery. The focus group approach covered areas such as:
- Level of support given to students
- Issues of functionality and flexibility
- Skills development
- Design of WebCT, online seminars and assessment
- General student experience
The research helps to inform the future design of blended learning within the Criminology curriculum specifically and the use of e-learning by the Sociology department in general. The full findings of the research was published in Learning and Teaching in Action Issue 10 in 2005.
In 2008 I was awarded the title of C-SAP National Associate (C-SAP is the HEA subject centre for Sociology). It comes with a funding award which will be used to develop the Focus on Crime project.
Government Liaison and Community Involvement
My academic work has practical application outside academia as I have been involved with the rape crisis movement for a number of years and was a Trustee of the Board of the Rape Crisis Federation for three years. I am currently a consultant to a number of rape crisis groups on legislative and media-based issues and often speak to the media (see page 7 of this document) also see Media Articles.
At a national level, I belong to two key campaign groups, Campaign to End Rape and Truth About Rape.
I was a member of the External Reference Group on the recent Sexual Offences Review conducted by the Home Office that led to the publication ‘Setting The Boundaries’ and which culminated in the Sexual Offences Act 2003. In recognition of this work I was invited to an evening reception with the Prime Minister at 10 Downing St in 2004 see page 7 of this document.
I am a member of the Inter-Ministerial Advisory Panel on Sexual Violence.
I currently hold a position of ‘expert adviser’ on the development and implementation of the ‘Victims of Violence and Abuse Prevention Programme’ which is a joint initiative between the Department of Health and the National Institute for Mental Health in England. This programme is headed by Professor Catherine Itzin.
