International E-communication Exchange

We live in a global world with knowledge no longer confined to geographical boundaries. To facilitate students’ participation in the borderless criminal justice community, an e-communication initiative was developed in 2004 between criminologists in Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK and the University of West Florida in the USA using information and communications technology (ICT) to help develop their students’ awareness of international issues. As well as developing students’ understanding of contemporary policy and popular concerns around crime, a key aim was to enhance and develop students’ independent learning skills. The way students are integrated into e-learning and supported through the experience is invaluable to success.

As employers increasingly seek diverse combinations of skills and knowledge and students expect programmes that can suit varied career demands, meeting these needs requires innovation and imagination. The IEE project is an innovative and imaginative approach to e-learning and provides, in the words of one final year criminology student, the “most difficult, demanding and yet valuable experience of my university life”.
